Note: In balloting on November 4, 2008, Johnson Toribiong, considered the “change” candidate, was elected president by approximately 200 votes over Elias Chin, the current vice president. In addition, in concurrent balloting for the Senate and the House of Delegates, only three incumbents were returned to each house, according to preliminary results. Toribiong and his vice presidential running mate, Karai Mariur, were scheduled to take office in January 2009, at which point a new cabinet was also slated for installation.

Political Status: Former U.S. Trust Territory; became sovereign state in free association with the United States on October 1, 1994.

Land Area: 178 sq. mi. (461 sq. km.).

Population: 19,907 (2005C); 20,295 (2007E). Approximately 6,000 residents are nonnationals.
