Note: On March 2 2009 President João Bernardo Vieira was shot dead by soldiers in his residence after reportedly arranging the assassination of army chief of staff, Gen.Batista Tagme Na Waie, a long-time rival. Raimundo Pereira, president of the National People’s Assembly, was sworn in as interim president in accordance with the constitution on March 3. An election is scheduled for June 28.
