Note: On November 25, 2008, 75 percent of those voting in a referendum in Greenland endorsed the proposed expansion of the island's autonomy, which supporters hoped would lead to full independence from Denmark by 2020. Assuming the expected approval of the parliaments in Greenland and Denmark, the home-rule government in Greenland was scheduled to begin to assume greater responsibility in June 2009 for police affairs, the justice system, immigration, the coast guard, and many other policy areas. Collaterally, Greenland was also scheduled to begin to receive much of the income from oil, gas, and gemstone deposits, whose value was expected to increase dramatically in coming years.

Political Status: Constitutional monarchy since 1849; under unicameral parliamentary system established in 1953.
