Note: In January 2009 a dissident group led by Gen. Ntaganda, army chief of the National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP), rejected current CNDP leader Gen. Laurent Nkunda, who was arrested by the Rwandan government on January 22, and rallied with the FARDC. Later in the month Rwandan forces entered the eastern DRC and, in cooperation with the FARDC, began an operation aimed at uprooting militants of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).
