Note: At the election of November 24, 2007, the Labor Party unseated Prime Minister John Howard’s Liberal-National coalition after 11 years in power. In the House of Representatives, Labor won 83 seats; the Liberal Party, 55; the National Party, 10; and independents, 2. Labor won 18 of the 40 contested Senate seats, while the Liberals won 15, the Australian Greens, 3; the Nationals, 2; and independents, 1. The Liberal-National coalition held a total of 37 seats in the 76-seat upper house, compared to 32 for Labor, with the balance of power in the hands of the Greens (5 seats), Family First (1 seat), and the independent. Labor’s Kevin Rudd was sworn in as prime minister on December 3.
