Note: Following parliamentary balloting on October 21, 2007, seat breakdown by party was as follows: Swiss People’s Party, 62; Social Democratic Party, 43; Radical Democratic Party, 31; Christian Democratic People’s Party, 31; Green Party, 20; Liberal Party, 4; Green Liberal Party, 3; Evangelical People’s Party, 2; Christian Social Party, 1; Federal Democratic Union, 1; Swiss Labor Party, 1; Ticino League, 1; other smaller parties, 13. Changes in the presidency and cabinet had not been announced at the time of writing.

Political Status: Neutral confederation from 1291; equivalent of federal system embodied in constitution of May 29, 1874. A new constitution, which revised and reformed that of 1874, went into effect on January 1, 2000 (as adopted April 18, 1999).
