Note: Early general elections were called on May 11, 2008, following Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence on February 17. The incumbent Democratic Party took 39 percent, followed by the Radical Party with 29 percent. The Socialists, who garnered 7.6 percent, were courted by both parties as a potential coalition partner.
Note: A runoff election for the presidency on February 3, 2008, gave the victory to pro-Western incumbent Boris Tadic, of the Democratic Party, with 50.3 percent of the vote. Nationalist challenger Tomislav Nikolic, of the Serbian Radical Party, won the first round of the election but received a 48 percent vote share in the runoff poll. Tadic was inaugurated on February 15.
