Note: Preliminary results of the legislative balloting on December 27, 2007, indicated that 23 parties won seats in the National Assembly, with the opposition Orange Democratic Movement securing a plurality of 99 seats; the Party of National Unity, 43 seats; Orange Democratic Movement–Kenya, 16; Kenya African National Union, 14; Safina, 5; NARC–K, 4; FORD–People, 3; NARC, 3. Fifteen other parties won 2 seats or fewer. In presidential balloting on the same day the Electoral Commission of Kenya declared incumbent Mwai Kibaki the winner over challenger Ralia Odinga, despite allegations by opposition leaders and international observers of widespread irregularities; ethnic violence over the disputed results led to hundreds of causalities and widespread unrest and provoked a police crackdown on demonstrations.
