Note: Cyprus held the first round of its presidential elections on February 17, 2008, eliminating Democratic Party incumbent Tassos Papadopoulos, who took 31.79 percent of votes, leaving Democratic Rally candidate Ioannis Kasoulides, with 33.51 percent, and Demetris Christofias, of the Progressive Party of the Working People (AKEL), with 33.29 percent. Christofias won the second round on February 24 with 53 percent, besting the 47 percent vote share won by Kasoulides. Christofias was inaugurated as president on February 29.
