Political Status: Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes constituted as an independent monarchy December 1, 1918, and formally renamed Yugoslavia on October 3, 1929; Communist People's Republic with federal system of government instituted November 29, 1945; Socialist Federal Republic proclaimed April 7, 1963; Federal Republic, encompassing Serbia and Montenegro, proclaimed April 27, 1992; “state union” of Serbia and Montenegro established February 4, 2003, under new Constitutional Charter.
Area: 39,449 sq. mi. (102,173 sq. km.), encompassing Serbia, 34,116 sq. mi. (88,361 sq. km.), and Montenegro, 5,333 sq. mi. (13,812 sq. km.). Included in Serbia are the autonomous provinces of Kosovo and Metohija, 4,203 sq. mi. (10,887 sq. km.), and Vojvodina, 8,304 sq. mi. (21,506 sq. km.).
