Political Status: Former Portuguese dependency; became independent as the People's Republic of Mozambique on June 25, 1975; present name adopted in constitution that came into effect on November 30, 1990.

Area: 309,494 sq. mi. (801,590 sq. km.).

Population: 16,542,740 (1997C); 18,968,000 (2004E). The 1997 figure includes an adjustment of 5.1 percent for underenumeration.

Major Urban Center (1993E): MAPUTO (1,327,000).

Official Language: Portuguese (a number of African languages are also spoken).

Monetary Unit: Metical (market rate July 1, 2005: 24,355 meticals = $1US).

President: Armando Emilio GUEBUZA (Mozambique Liberation Front); inaugurated on February 2, 2005, following presidential election of December 1–2, 2004, succeeded Joaquim Alberto CHISSANO (Mozambique Liberation Front).
