Political Status: Former constituent republic of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia; independence proclaimed under constitution of November 17, 1991, on the basis of a referendum conducted September 8.
Area: 9,928 sq. mi. (25,713 sq. km.).
Population: 2,045,000 (2004E). The 2002 ethnic census showed that out of a total of over 2 million residents, ethnic Macedonians accounted for 64.2 percent and ethnic Albanians for 25.2 percent of the population.
Major Urban Center: (2002C): SKOPJE (440,557).
Official Language: Macedonian.
Monetary Unit: New Macedonian Denar (market rate July 1, 2005: 50.5 denars = $1US).
