Political Status: Independent state proclaimed in 1804; republic since 1859; military-backed regime installed following coup of September 30, 1991; constitutional government reinstated on November 8, 1994.

Area: 10,714 sq. mi. (27,750 sq. km.).

Population: 5,053,792 (1982C); 9,802,000 (2004E). The 1982 figure did not include an adjustment for underenumeration.

Major Urban Center (1999E): PORT-AU-PRINCE (889,000).

Official Languages: French, Creole.

Monetary Unit: Gourde (market rate July 1, 2005: 39.4 gourdes = $1US).

Acting President: Boniface ALEXANDRE (Independent); sworn in on March 8, 2004, as constitutional successor to Jean-Bertrand ARISTIDE (The Lavalas Family), who left the country after resigning on February 29.

Prime Minister: Gérard LATORTUE (Independent); named by US-backed Council of Elders on March 9, 2004, and sworn in on March 17, succeeding Yvon NEPTUNE (The Lavalas Family).
