Political Status: Independent republic proclaimed 1825; civilian government reestablished in October 1982 after virtually constant military rule since September 1969.

Area: 424,162 sq. mi. (1,098,581 sq. km.).

Population: 8,280,184 (2001C); 8,814,000 (2004E).

Major Urban Centers (2000E): LA PAZ (administrative capital, 1,004,000), Sucre (judicial capital, 223,000), Santa Cruz (1,034,000), Cochabamba (616,000), Oruro (248,000).

Official Languages: Spanish, Aymará, Quechua (Aymará and Quechua were adopted as official languages in 1977).

Monetary Unit: Boliviano (market rate July 1, 2005: 8.09 bolivianos = $1US); the peso was replaced by the boliviano in February 1987 at a ratio of 1,000,000:1.
