    Note: In the October 12, 2014 elections to the National Assembly, Independent Democratic Action (ADI) won 33 seats; the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe–Social Democratic Party, 16; the Party of Democratic Convergence, 5; and the Union for Democracy and Development, 1. ADI leader and former prime minister Patrice TROVOADA returned to the premiership as head of a new ADI-dominated cabinet that was installed on November 29.

    Political Status: Achieved independence from Portugal on July 12, 1975; constitution of November 5, 1975, revised in December 1982, October 1987, August 1990, and March 2003; currently under multiparty mixed presidential-parliamentary system.

    Area: 387 sq. mi. (1,001 sq. km).

    Population: 198,375 (2014E—UN); 190,428 (2014E—U.S. Census).
