Political Status: Constitutional hereditary emirate; independent since June 19, 1961, save for occupation by Iraq from August 2, 1990, to February 26, 1991; draft constitution approved by the sovereign on November 1, 1962, and entered into force January 29, 1963.

Population: 2,213,403 (2005C), including 880,774 Kuwaitis and 1,332,629 non-Kuwaitis (the 2005 figures are not adjusted for underenumeration); the [Page 805]government announced in 2012 that preliminary results from a census conducted in 2011 indicated that total population had reached approximately 3.06 million (approximately 35 percent Kuwaitis); 2,742,711 (2014E—U.S. Census).

Official Language: Arabic.
