    Political Status: Nominally independent in 1922; republic established in 1953; joined with Syria as the United Arab Republic in 1958 and retained the name after Syria withdrew in 1961; present name adopted September 2, 1971; under limited multiparty system formally adopted by constitutional amendment approved in referendum of May 22, 1980; provision for direct, multicandidate presidential election formally adopted by constitutional amendment approved in referendum of May 25, 2005.

    Area: 386,659 sq. mi. (1,001,449 sq. km).

    Population: 87,387,886 (2013E—UN); 86,895,099 (2014E—U.S. Census).

    Major Urban Centers (2010E): AL-QAHIRA (Cairo, 11,660,671), al-Giza (3,628,062), al-Iskandariyah (Alexandria, 4,358,439), Es-Suweis (Suez, 556,655), Bur Said (Port Said, 610,468).

    Official Language: Arabic.

    Monetary Unit: Egyptian Pound (market rate October 1, 2014: 7.15 pounds = $1US).
