The term fake news broadly refers to news content that consists of deliberate misinformation. The purpose of this fake news presumably is either to intentionally mislead the audience, to entertain the audience (often when they understand the hoax), or to make money for the fake-news producer. Certainly, more than one of these goals may possibly motivate fake-news producers. Fake-news stories that go viral on social media, for instance, can generate significant advertising revenues (as consumers click through to the originating site) while also achieving the producers’ political or entertainment ends.
