In July 2019, Puerto Rican governor Ricardo Rosselló and nine other officials became embroiled in a scandal involving inappropriate chat messages that disparaged segments of the island nation’s population and elected officials. News of the scandal broke shortly after two former high-level government officials were indicted on corruption charges. Angered by these developments and other long-simmering frustrations with the government, Puerto Ricans took to the streets to demand Rosselló’s resignation. Rosselló eventually capitulated, but his successor, Justice Secretary Wanda Vázquez, is also unpopular and has already faced calls for her resignation.
