The United States’ 2018 withdrawal from the multilateral nuclear deal with Iran and its reimposition of sanctions against the Islamic republic further strained already tense relations between the two countries and created difficulties for the remaining parties to the accord. Iran resumed some of the activities restricted by the agreement at various points throughout 2019 in an effort to push European signatories to soften the impact of U.S. sanctions. These violations and Iran’s involvement in regional hostilities—including its shooting down of a U.S. drone and alleged role in attacking several oil tankers—prompted President Donald Trump and his administration to introduce new sanctions.
