Kazakhstan president Nursultan Nazarbayev’s surprising resignation in March 2019 set the stage for an early presidential election that handed his chosen successor, Senate chair Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, an overwhelming victory. Accusations of election-rigging and a growing desire among some Kazakhs for political change prompted rare demonstrations in major cities, challenging the country’s tight restrictions on public assembly. Despite calls for dialogue and cooperation, the new president has overseen an ongoing suppression of dissent while promising a continuation of Nazarbayev’s policies.
