Russia spent nearly seven years preparing itself to host its first ever Olympic Winter Games in the seaside resort town of Sochi. The games were the most expensive in Olympic history and in their run-up were overshadowed by a number of issues including President Vladimir Putin's crackdown on homosexual propaganda. However, perhaps the largest issue of all was security concerns, especially those raised following two terrorist bombings in late December 2013.
