In November 2013, representatives from the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, China, France, and Germany, a group known as the P5+1 in the United States (and known as the EP3+3 in Europe), reached a landmark agreement with Iranian representatives on a short-term plan for resolving the international dispute over Iran's nuclear program. Western countries and the UN had for many years sought to limit Iran's nuclear activities, primarily through economic sanctions, amid suspicions that the country has been attempting to build nuclear weapons in violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
