In late 2012, the U.S. Department of Justice announced legal action against one of the nation's largest banks, J.P. Morgan Chase Bank (J.P. Morgan), which stood accused of misconduct related to the sale of mortgage-backed securities that contributed to the 2008 financial crisis. Just over a year later, both parties announced a record-breaking settlement totaling $13 billion. The settlement is one of many paid out by the bank related to its actions prior to and during the financial crisis.
