In October 2013, the federal government shut down for sixteen days because Congress could not reach an agreement on a budget to keep the government running. The impact was felt across the country where vacationers were kept out of national parks, school groups arrived in Washington, D.C., only to find “closed” signs on museums, and home-buyers could not receive federally backed loans. The shutdown was brought to an end on October 16 when Democrats and Republicans reached an agreement that would keep the government funded at its current level through January 15, 2014.
