On July 8, the European Union (EU) and the United States started negotiating a free trade agreement, holding a first round of talks in Washington, D.C. The planned trade pact, which is called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) would, if concluded, be the world's largest bilateral free trade agreement, covering 40 percent of the world's economic output.
