While the news outlet was working on a story in May 2012 about a covert Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operation, the Department of Justice secretly subpoenaed the phone records of more than twenty Associated Press (AP) phone lines. The Department said it was trying to determine where the AP had received leaked classified information, but the case set off a firestorm between the media, who accused the Department of Justice of violating First Amendment rights, and federal officials, who defended their move in the name of national security.
