October 2018 saw Brazilians head to the polls for the first general election since a widespread corruption scandal ensnared dozens of politicians and led to the impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff. The election was widely viewed as a referendum on the Workers’ Party, to which Rousseff and her predecessor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva belonged, and the political left. Voters had grown disillusioned by the many corruption scandals plaguing the Workers’ Party, with just 17 percent of Brazilians expressing confidence in the national government according to a Gallup poll.
