After two years of delays, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) held an election to determine outgoing president Joseph Kabila’s successor on December 30, 2018. The run-up to the vote was marked by protests demanding Kabila leave office, claims by opposition leaders that government loyalists were collaborating to extend the president’s term, and numerous challenges to electoral preparations.
