On September 12, 2018, the U.S. Census Bureau released its annual report on the number of Americans living in poverty, along with a supplemental measure of these statistics that is designed to account for factors such as government safety-net programs including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly referred to as food stamps. The supplemental report noted no statistically significant decrease in either the rate or number of people in poverty, but the traditional report did note a small decrease in the poverty rate, the third consecutive annual decline.
