Three major mergers within the U.S. technology sector drew federal regulators’ attention in 2018. In an unusual move, President Donald Trump issued an executive order to block the proposed takeover of Qualcomm by foreign-based Broadcom before a final agreement had been reached, citing national security concerns. In June, a federal district court denied the government’s request to prevent AT&T and Time Warner from merging; less than two months later, the U.S. Justice Department appealed the ruling. Finally, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) began its review of a proposed merger between T-Mobile and Sprint.
