■ Introduction

The International Trade Administration (ITA), formerly the Industry and Trade Administration, was established January 2, 1980. The ITA grew out of a presidential directive aimed at consolidating the federal government’s non-agricultural trade functions, particularly export promotion, into a single agency. The functions of the ITA are to expand exports, improve enforcement of U.S. trade laws, and upgrade government trade activities in line with the Multilateral Trade Negotiations agreements signed by the United States in 1979.
