The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), formerly the Food and Consumer Service (FCS), was established in 1969 to administer the food assistance programs of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The FNS is under the jurisdiction of the assistant secretary of agriculture for food, nutrition, and consumer services.
