Gramsci, Antonio
Antonio Gramsci (1891–1937) was one of the twentieth century’s most popular and influential Marxist figures. However, his influence has been almost entirely posthumous. Imprisoned in his native Italy by the fascist regime, Gramsci’s ideas reached a wider audience only after his death when, from the late 1940s onward, the Italian Communist Party published his prison writings. Since then, his work has been translated and disseminated to a global audience. Offering a notably pragmatic approach to revolution, Gramsci highlighted the cultural and political factors that sustained class rule and advocated a strategy designed to tackle them. In his analysis of hegemony, or consensual domination, he offered a nuanced appreciation of the complexities of power in capitalist society that continues to inspire theorists today.
