Fabianism
Fabian socialism can be defined in three important and distinctive ways; first, as a relatively homogenous set of socialist arguments developed by a small group of British and Irish intellectuals in London in the 1880s; second, as the whole range of political doctrines (social democratic as well as strictly socialist) developed under the banner of the Fabian Society from its foundation in 1884 until the present day; and third, as a more specifically anti-Marxist form of socialism current during the same period. This entry emphasizes the first and third definitions, although it will also take some time to consider the middle and late twentieth-century developments that succeeded classical Fabianism.
