Bergson, Henri
Henri-Louis Bergson (1859–1941) was a French philosopher best known for his work on time, memory, and evolution and for his use of intuition in philosophical method. The attention he pays throughout his work to the processual nature of reality—to states of becoming rather than being—associates him with process philosophy. Due to his insistence on the inherent creative tendencies in biological life, he is often considered a vitalist, though he differs from proponents of other traditions of vitalism in maintaining a nonteleological view of evolution. An ethical dimension can be traced across his central ontological, psychological, and biological concerns, and several authors have developed the social and political implications of his philosophy.
