The Barcelona Airbnb Ban

Abstract

Barcelona recently became the first major city to institute a complete ban on the short-term rental company Airbnb, which allows travelers to rent private rooms or residences rather than rely on hotels. The ban comes as several other major European tourism hubs, including Paris and Amsterdam, also attempt to introduce measures to rein in Airbnb, saying that the company has led to unsustainable tourism and shortages in housing. This short case asks students to discuss what might follow Barcelona’s ban and how Airbnb should respond.
