Tech’s Virtual Land Boom

Abstract

The land rush of the 21st century is not taking place on land at all, but in the digital sphere known as the metaverse. As digital currencies and assets gain popularity, and as the tech world continues its foray into expanding the online virtual universe, early speculators have been investing large sums in digital properties. But the digital land boom is not without its risks, being highly speculative and vulnerable to the volatility of the digital economy, as evidenced by Meta’s recent record-breaking plunge in value. This case asks students to discuss the phenomenon of virtual real estate and to forecast how they expect future investment in the metaverse to evolve.
