Spotify’s Foray Into Audiobooks Meets Resistance From Apple

Abstract

Spotify’s recent expansion into offering audiobooks for purchase through its app has been repeatedly rejected by Apple for iOS devices, with Apple insisting that audiobook purchases be made exclusively through its own App Store, from which it receives a 30% commission. Spotify has since launched a campaign against this “Apple tax,” accusing the tech giant of stifling competition and innovation from other tech companies and app developers. This case reviews and asks students to discuss the tension between Spotify and Apple.
