Patagonia Founder Donates Company to Fight Climate Change

Abstract

In an unusual move, Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard announced in August that he will donate the company to fight climate change. While it’s an unorthodox method of transferring ownership, it’s in keeping with Chouinard’s leadership and with Patagonia’s reputation as being a sustainable and socially responsible company. This case covers what it means to ‘donate’ a company and asks students to discuss Chouinard’s decision.
