Abstract

This case traces the rise of Olam International from humble beginnings in Africa to become a global player, headquartered in Singapore. It examines the processes of growth, internationalisation and diversification into ‘adjacent’ businesses as the company built a multinational company from Asia through ‘greenfield’ expansion, alliances and acquisitions. It explores how the company has gone about capturing synergies across an ever more diverse range of agribusinesses and geographies by developing ‘signature processes’ such as strategic planning, diagnostics and control systems, performance management and compensation systems that are common to all Olam's businesses and promote an ‘ownership mentality’ in management and employees.
