Nintendo and COVID-19: From Stockout to Increasing Sales

Abstract

Unlike many other businesses in the entertainment sector, companies linked to the video game industry expanded during the coronavirus pandemic. An increased demand led to substantial revenue for companies such as Nintendo. In spite of distribution issues, release date delays, and stockouts, Nintendo managed to weather a turbulent environment. But was the company’s success just ephemeral good luck, or did they put in the work needed to maintain loyal consumers and attract new ones? In this case, students are asked to analyze two of the bestselling games in 2020 for Nintendo Switch—Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Ring Fit Adventure—to shed more light on the true situation for the company.
