Abstract

New England Biolabs (NEB) is a small biotech company in the seaside town of Ipswich, MA. The company has a deep commitment to sustainability, illustrated in continual improvement initiatives in environmental, social, and economic responsibility. NEB views environmental sustainability initiatives in lockstep with its commitment to scientific innovation. This case examines NEB as it tries to determine a location for a large ground mount solar installation to help mitigate its carbon emissions and meet company goals for environmental responsibility. Seeking the best location for the solar array, senior management bumps against their desire to do the right thing for climate action, the needs of a local conservation organization, and NEB’s existing partnerships with the town and local youth soccer league.
