Netflix Employees Walk Out Over Company Culture

Abstract

In October, members of Netflix’s employee resource group Trans*, coworkers, and other allies staged a walkout to protest Netflix’s decision to release Dave Chappelle’s latest comedy special, which contains a litany of transphobic material. The controversy provoked larger questions about the gulf between Netflix’s public values and its company culture—employees who expressed concern about Chappelle’s special were roundly ignored by its leadership, and some of the workers who organized the walkout were fired or suspended. This case asks students to discuss Netflix’s response to the controversy and its obligation toward audiences and employees.
