Maria Sharapova: Banishment from WTA Tour and a Loss of Sponsorship

  • Supplementary Resources

Abstract

In this case the student is invited to consider how Maria Sharapova should proceed after testing positive for the banned substance Meldonium. Sharapova admitted that she had taken the drug in 2016, but stressed that the violation was not intentional, she was prescribed Meldonium by her doctor and the drug only became a banned substance the month previously. The study also examines how corporate sponsors reacted to the news of Sharapova’s failed drug test and how her earnings might be affected.
