Kaldi’s Coffee: Can Ethiopia’s Premier Coffee Shop Continue to Grow?

Abstract

Named after the person who discovered coffee in Ethiopia, a nation that meets a large part of the global demand for coffee, the successful Kaldi’s Coffee chain was inspired by and modeled itself on Starbucks. With more than 38 branches in two Ethiopian cities, the founders of Kaldi’s Coffee have diversified their business and vertically integrated its supply chain to control quality of both product and service. In light of a changing landscape in Ethiopia and Africa, the question is whether Kaldi’s Coffee can sustain growth with their existing strategy.
