How Will China’s COVID-19 Lockdowns Affect the Economy?

Abstract

This spring, a fresh wave of COVID-19 infections in some of China’s largest cities and manufacturing hubs, including Shanghai, triggered strict lockdowns and factory closures, sending the country’s economy into a standstill that was felt well beyond the country’s borders. With lockdowns being introduced again this summer after a brief reopening, it remains unclear how severely the closures and disruptions will add to an already strained global economy. This case asks students to discuss the short- and long-term impacts of China’s lockdowns.
