Going Through Purgatory to Start a Brewpub: The Case of Purgatory Beer Co.

Abstract

Two home brewers have decided to open a brewpub in an old mill in Massachusetts and face obstacles with the licensing and registration process. The extreme licensing and inspection regimens have increased the time and money the entrepreneurs needed to start; they have spent more than two years, tens of thousands of dollars, and still have not opened. As novices to the industry, they now recognize marketing plan mistakes that may require them to go back into the licensing process to make their business more viable.
