Writing the Introduction Chapter

The Introduction begins the narrative arc of the thesis by fulfilling two essential functions: it introduces the problem, its significance and the purpose of the study, and it gives an overview of the organization of the thesis. Especially in a qualitative or mixed-methods study, or in a publication thesis, it is also likely to contain some reflective element. It is not typically a long chapter, though it can be, and there is a variety of ways to divide it up, depending on what you want to prioritize in terms of depth and detail, and your larger purpose.
