Learning Mentors in Primary Classrooms and Schools
Ten years ago it would have been rare to find learning mentors in the English education system. In this chapter I look at their introduction and growth in primary schools, examine the training given and explore their role in one school. I hope to show how this particular initiative has produced a very distinctive ‘new’ professional in primary schools.
Background
Learning mentors form one strand of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) Excellence in Cities programme. This expanding initiative was introduced in March 1999 to tackle ‘specific problems’ facing children in our cities.
